Galogi Power Station is located 22km away from the state capital Dehradun. Galogihydel power station was among the earliest hydropower plants commissioned by the British in 1907. Three more plants were commissioned at the same time at Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, Darjeeling in West Bengal and Mysore in Karnataka. Galogi was the first hydel power station to generate electricity and light up houses on November 9, 1912. Some of these records go as far back as December 19, 1912. While the other three plants have stopped functioning long back, Galogi continues to be in service, nearly 106 years later. It still lights up homes in Mussoorie’s Barlowganj and Doon valley’s Anarwala area in district Dehradun.

The Pilangad Small Hydro Project is strategically located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, nestled in the village of Malla (Bhela Tepry) along the Uttarkashi-Gangotri route. The site benefits from a substantial catchment area of 198.5 square kilometres, fed by the Pilangad River, which ultimately joins the Bhagirathi River. The project is designed to handle a maximum flood discharge of 825 cumecs, making it suitable for medium to high head operations.

The diversion structure is a trench-type RCC weir, engineered to manage a discharge capacity of 3.50 cumecs. Water is directed through a hopper-type desilting tank capable of filtering particles of 0.2 mm and larger. The water conductor system includes a power duct and a rectangular open channel, with a total channel length of 1200 meters and a design discharge of 2.75 cumecs.

Water is stored temporarily in a forebay with two-minute retention capacity before being channelled through a single penstock that bifurcates into two pipes leading to the powerhouse. The powerhouse, built at an elevation of 1475 meters, houses two Francis turbines with a combined installed capacity of 2250 KW. These are paired with synchronous generators rated at 1250 kVA each, operating at 3.3/33 KV and 1000 rpm.

Chibro HEP is a Run-of-River scheme with an underground Power Station. It was the first underground Power Station in North India and was commissioned in year 1975. The Power station draws water from Ichari dam located on the river Tons, one of the major tributary of river Yamuna.

Chibro Power station is a unique engineering marvel in the country and was the first experience in carrying out tunneling in Himalayan Thrust Zones, which was a challenge due to varied rock structure and throws up unexpected challenges in tunneling efforts. The water from Ichari Dam is fed into the Power station through a 6.2 Km long Head Race Tunnel (HRT). The Power Station comprising of 4 units of 60 MW each Francis turbines of 84,000 HP output, is housed in a rock cover with the major challenge of maintaining fresh air and safety measures due to constraint of space. Khodri HEP is a Run-of-River scheme with a surface Power Station. It was commissioned in year 1984. Water discharged from the Chibro Power Plant is returned into the Tons River just 100 m upstream of the intake for the Khodri Power Station.

During the construction of Khodri, a long tunnel was divided into three small tunnels. This was done with Trifurcation technique which was employed for the very first time in the world. Water enters the intake and then travels south down a 7.5 km head-race tunnel (HRT) which leads to the power station on the Yamuna River. The operation of Chibro and Khodri Power Stations is an engineering marvel. The tandem control scheme between Chibro and Khodri Power Stations is the first of its kind in the country which optimizes the utilization of water for generation. The Power Station comprises of 4 units of 30 MW each Francis turbines of 43,600 HP output. Maneri Bhali-II Hydro Power Station is a run of river with pondage scheme. ManeriBhali Hydroelectric Project II envisages the utilization of head available in the river Bhagirathi between the tail waters of ManeriBhali Stage I and Stage II Projects. In ManeriBhali Stage II Project, water is diverted through a barrage at Joshiyara situated near the township of Uttarkashi at about 152 Km from Rishikesh, the nearest railhead. The barrage is designed to divert 142 cumecs of water into a head race tunnel of diameter 6.0 m and length 16 km to generate electricity through a Power Station of 4X76 MW constructed at Dharasu.

The Power Station comprises of four hydro power generating units of 76 MW each. The generator is powered by Francis turbines of 78 MW rated capacity. The rated flow through each turbine is 35.5 cumecs and is discharged to a common tail race channel.
